Simulated Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer for prediction of function loss

Surgery on a digital look-alike

Patients with a tumor in the main neck area may be affected by all kinds of problems, including speech or swallowing after surgery. Prof. Dr. Fons Balm of the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek hospital is therefore working on an innovative technique in which a three-dimensional functional model of the patient is made. On this digital dual-pointer, the operation can be performed virtually. For example, it can be predicted what the effects of the operation will be, and alternatives may be considered. This technique is still under development, but hopefully it will be used in the clinic in a few years.
